'62 Revisited

I spied her on the cycle path,
just coming into view,
she pushed a buggy, I just sat
with not much else to do.

I don't quite know what made me wait
until she reached our spot,
but as she neared, I called my dog
and we headed for our lot.

We walk beside her for a while,
as canine sniffs the grass,
she hesitates, as if she thought
that we were going to pass.

But dog persists, then stops and goes,
as canines tend to do,
so I hook dog's collar to the leash,
lest the lady leaves my view.

We caught her and I spoke to her,
a friendly thing to say,
her grandson in the buggy
called my friendly dog to play.

Then, as we part, my mind rewinds
and memory plays review,
I'm sure I knew this beauty
back in 1962.

Turning 'round, I ask her
"Did you once know a chap named Matt?"
She asked "What was his last name?",
I told her and she laughed.

She said "I married him years ago,
but we're a pair no more.
I've married 3 times.", so I ask
"Are you seeking husband number 4?"

"Do I know you?" laughed the lady,
then "Why'd you ask me that?"
I said "You were a beauty then,
you haven't changed, and that's a fact.

"Your posture is the same, my dear,
the way you walk and how you stand.
You're straight, you're slim,
your hair's the same.
No surprise you're in demand.

"As for me, my looks have changed,
it really isn't fair,
but I'll fix my teeth and come look for you
when I grow back my hair.

"No... I've been joking, I have a Fiancee
and I hope she's coming soon,
but if that fails I shall return
and pick a fragrant flower from '62."
