Misunderstood
When I awoke and found you gone,
left without a parting kiss,
misunderstood, and treated wrong,
but, still, with Love and thoughtfulness.
I made allowance for your ills,
but felt that something deeper lay
within your mind, of childhood chills,
and things that happened to you then
that shamed so much, you could not say.
If only you had told me then
of your past hurts and life upset,
by other men who did not care
for you as much as I still do,
although we parted, I can't forget.
My recollections of the past
were bitter ghosts, and hard to lay;
you looked on these as my regrets
for leaving all that I once had,
not wishing to remain with you,
but you got it wrong and sent me away.
If you had realised back there,
what I realise today,
that I loved you then and I still care,
but your illness made your thinking sway.
We'd be together still, I feel,
if you'd just seen life in a different way.
