Moonlight and Stardust
On a dull breezy day in this cool English summer
My mind gently drifts to a land far away,
Where climate is warmer, some seasons are rainy,
Folk are poor but respectful, they smile... they're not grey.
There waits a fine lady, she's bronzed to perfection,
Hair black as a raven and her smile starts to beam,
Her eyes shine like coals as she bids him Welcome,
And her smile blinds the sun as he steps off the plane.
Their first time to meet was this week of vacation
But each knew the other from the letters they sent.
She'd taken some time from her work just to greet him
And show him her homeland with noble intent.
With heart that was pounding she showed him her family,
Her sons and her daughters, her siblings as well,
With nerves all a-tingle she hoped they would like him,
Then with anxious excitement she knew she could tell.
The day had been long and he'd travelled for hours,
Then an overnight boat trip she thought was too much,
With a wave of his hand he dismissed sleepy feelings,
Took her warm hand in his as they walked t'ward the beach.
Her long hair is tied back, so shiny and swaying
As they walk on the sand at the edge of the surf,
With moonlight on water she smiles with contentment
And then starts to giggle in mystical mirth.
So long had it been since she last felt this worthy,
So long had it been since she yearned in this way,
She'd recently felt a burning need to be wanted,
Now she prays from her heart that it won't slip away.
From the top of the hill they look down on the city,
The street lights have dimmed for their pleasure it seems,
They lay down on the grass and look up to the heavens
To a miriad of stars, and remember their dreams.
Her new man lay with her and she barely knew him,
But she felt in her heart he was surely the one,
As he placed his arm gently 'round her silken shoulders,
She felt comfort and love that she thought was long gone.
It seemed like forever they just lay their holding,
Lost in the warm glow of comfort's embrace,
As if they had known one another a lifetime,
Now a lifetime before them is theirs left to face.
