Reluctant Romeo
He almost didn't go that night,
because of pictures in his mind,
"What if I go and then take fright...
or even worse, they me decline?"
To be declined was not a prob,
they didn't organise a thing,
just a bunch of singles down the pub,
to sit and talk, meet friends and sing.
Twenty one years with the girl he wed,
he thought their ties were safe enough,
but now, since twenty years divorced,
his recent years had been quite tough.
He'd heard about this "Singles night"
and thought he might pop in and see,
"Nahh, I'll not bother... Dunno, I might...
but what if they're all too young for me?"
"I'd feel a fool to just walk in,
ole fart like me, what will they think?
But then... how are they to know
I didn't just come in for a drink?"
He'd fallen hard for a foreign girl,
but their love had lately troubled been,
then his ex-wife whispered in his ear,
"You're crazy... join the local scene".
The dating scene was something new,
he'd never bothered with such things,
and, even as a spotless youth,
to get a girl, for him, came easily.
He pondered on this thought a while,
and then decided "Oh, what the hell,
there's nowt to lose, go there and smile,
what happens next, only time will tell".
The girl he loved had captured him,
but he'd questioned her fidelity.
From such a distance, was their Love
a dream or just a whim?
He dismissed doubt and chose loyalty.
As days passed by "I'm gonna go,
I think I'll take a look,
and if someone there should fancy me,
I could write their number in a book,
in case my Love should set me free".
Now you've heard my tale, why here I be,
if to my emotions you can relate,
C'mon... give us yer number
and if I'm set free,
p'raps we two could have a date.
